A university student in Chang-hua has recently won international recognition with her brain child at an invention exhibition in Malaysia, defeating more than 100 competing submissions. And her award-winning work also earned a license fee of 1 million NT dollars for her back in Taiwan. So what exactly is it and what's so amazing about it? Let's find out.

Chan Yu-shan's invention may look simple, but it adds a measure of convenience to daily life.

Most ring binders have to be taken apart for a page to be added or removed.

Chan's addition of a small zipper closure to the side of pages allows users to quickly add pages into the binder.

Chan's invention defeated more than 100 other submissions for the stationary division gold medal at an international invention exhibition held in Malaysia this past May.

She has successfully applied for a patent in Taiwan, and received a license fee of 1 million NT.

Chan comes from an impoverished family, and her parents rely on a small bread stand to put food on the table. All three of her brothers are attending school on student loans.

Chan's guidance counselor sees her determination to make something of herself, and believes that her creativity and hard work will pay off.
