The Taipei Biennale has opened, showcasing projects from more than 50 artists around the world.

Here on CTS, let's check out some of the works which target controversial issues including the recent scandal involving the Taipei Flora Expo.

Inside the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, 40 huge basalt stones lie on the floor each one representing a tree that has been cut down to make way for new venues associated with the Taipei Flora Expo.

The artist Shi Jin-hua says it is like a stone tomb to commemorate the death of every tree. This year's Taipei Biennial, contains many works that convey a strong sense of criticism and reflection.

Chinese medicine practitioners were on hand in the museum to help visitors to get a free doctor visit, a work of art that is satirical in nature. There was also lots of mobile art as Hong Kong artist Pak Sheung Chuen even offered to go home with the audience. Viewers were also treated to a DIY beer factory, as there was a discussion between the relationship between art and production.

Curator Lin Hongjohn said the 2010 Biennial invited 59 artists from around the world, with a total of 75 works on display as it hoped to break through the existing framework of the biennales in previous years, create a new, experimental biennale. This year's Taipei Biennial was also the first time to venture outside of the museum, with the museum's outdoor plaza and Danshui MRT station, and Taipei MOCA and various other contemporary art spaces having works on display.
