In the greater Kaohsiung mayor's race,

KMT mayoral candidate Huang Chao-shun reiterated her goal of fighting corruption yesterday. Meanwhile, her opponent, independent candidate Yang Chiu-hsing, took a leave of absence from Kaohsiung County government to focus on campaign activities. He said that he won't return to DPP or join any other political party if he wins the election.

On Friday, KMT Kaohsiung mayor candidate Huang Chao-shun lit incense and prayed for victory at her campaign headquarters.

Outside, supporters shouted words of encouragement as a team of lion dancers wove its way through the crowd.

Later on, Huang said that sacrifices must be made for gains in any campaign, and that she will be sacrificing corruption and recession for clean politics and a healthy economy.

Although the DPP's Kaohsiung and Tainan candidates are campaigning together, Huang guaranteed that she would surprise analysts and win the election.

Independent candidate Yang Chiu-hsing, meanwhile, took a leave of absence from the Kaohsiung County Government and spent Friday canvassing the streets with his youth corps.

He also visited Yuhuang Temple to light incense and pray. Yang made four wishes, and said that he would not re-join the DPP or join any other party if he is elected.

He further said that he would be taking a middle-of-the-road approach, and that he will lead the development of southern Taiwan's other cities and counties by developing Kaohsiung.

When asked about the sentencing of former president Chen Shui-bian for corruption, Huang said that this was the most glorious day in the history of the judicial system, while Yang would only say that he respects the judicial process.
