The Central Weather Bureau's Seismological Center plans to set up an underwater cable along with seismic detection equipment off the coast of Yilan's Toucheng next March, which is expected to improve the authorties' earthquake forecast capability by 10 seconds.

Yilan Elementary School has an earthquake early warning system that flashes lights and broadcasts an alarm on every floor of the school ten seconds before earthquakes measuring higher than magnitude 5 occur.

Because earthquakes can't be forecasted like weather, the Central Weather Bureau has invested 400 million NT in a new seismological center.

Next March, the center will set up a 45-kilometer long seabed cable and install strong motion seismometers, broadband seismic networks, and tsunami sensors off the coast of Yilan's Toucheng.

According to the center, this alarm system will not only extend Taiwan's seismic network into the ocean and expand the island's monitoring scope, but also provide timely response to prevent losses and damage.
