Facing expulsion from the DPP over a ballot controversy, New Taipei City Councilor Lee Wan-yu tearfully announced her resignation from the party on Tuesday, swearing that her failure to vote for the party's nominee in the Council Speaker's race was totally unintentional. But the DPP refused to accept her request, and will proceed to expel her as originally planned.

With a guileless expression on her face, New Taipei City Councilor Lee Wan-yu wept as she announced her withdrawal from the DPP.

Last Saturday, Lee voted for herself for council speaker rather than the party's nominee.

Because the DPP's Central Review Committee is expected to officially expel her from the party on Wednesday, Lee decided to tearfully announce that she was resigning from the party on Tuesday.

In the face of criticism from other DPP members for voting for herself, Lee said that their accusations were excessively harsh and that she was taking responsibility for her mistake.

However, many are pointing out that she will enjoy much greater freedom as an independent politician, and political analysts say that her withdrawal was a smart, premeditated move.
