In a speech at the Commonwealth Economic Forum on Monday, President Ma Ying-jeou emphasized that the fruits of Taiwan's stellar economic growth last year should be shared by all the people. Hence the Executive Yuan is considering a potential salary raise for civil servants nationwide at this point, which, if eventually confirmed, will mark their first pay hike since 2005.

With many of Taiwan's industry heavyweights in attendance at the economic forum,

President Ma Ying-jeou discussed Taiwan's 20-year high economic growth rate last year and called on companies to maintain employee wage levels this year.

The government hopes to take the lead by raising the wages of civil servants in the near future.

Later in the day, Premier Wu Den-yih said that the Executive Yuan is still exploring the feasibility of a blanket raise as well as possible raise scales.

It has been six years since civil servant wages were last adjusted.

While most of Taiwan's economic markers are positive, the majority of taxpayers say that their wage levels have remained the same.

The Executive Yuan therefore hopes to implement new measures that will allow everyone to benefit from Taiwan's growing economy.
