Around 3,000 stray dogs are captured every year in Yunlin County, and most of them are eventually put down because of the lack of public animal shelters in the area. To fight for their chance to live, a group of animal lovers has gathered in front of the Yunlin County Animal Disease Control Center, hoping that the authorities will hear their voices by coming up with a solution.

Maintenance crews from 20 township offices gathered at the Yunlin County Animal Disease Control Center on Tuesday with dog cages.

The 3,000 stray dogs that are captured in Yunlin County every year are sent to temporary shelters, but any dog that is not adopted within 12 days is put down.

Yunlin and Penghu are currently the only municipalities in Taiwan without public dog shelters, and space and human resources are sadly lacking.

Although the county government is planning to increase the number of temporary shelters to 15, maintenance crews say that assistance is limited and permanent shelters are crucial.

They also hope that everyone can work together to protect the lives of stray animals, and elect to adopt, rather than purchase, dogs.
