Regarding the next step for Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, who is close to the end of his final term as KMT's at-large legislator, some political analysts have pointed out that Wang is a suitable choice for either premier or the next running mate for President Ma, as long as the relations between the two are not as strained as widely alleged.

Following King Pu-tsung's resignation as KMT secretary-general, Liao Liou-yi was appointed as his successor and Wu Jin-lin was chosen to replace Liao as Presidential secretary-general.

Like Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng, Liao and Wu are both members of the KMT's localization faction. Wang's second term as an at-large legislator will soon end, and he will not be able to serve a third term under party regulations.

Some analysts say that the KMT should amend its articles so that Wang can retain his post, which would help party unity.

Others say that there is little room for Wang to rise up in the ranks unless President Ma Ying-jeou were to name him his running mate in the next presidential elections or appoint him to the premier post.

However, relations between Ma and Wang have been strained since Ma's landslide victory over Wang in the 2005 KMT chairman election, which Ma won by a 72% to 28% margin.

Wang subsequently rejected Ma's offer to serve as party vice chairman, and calls for Ma and Wang to run on the same ticket in 2008 also went unheeded.

The two reportedly disagree on Taiwan's United Nations referendum and ECFA review process, and Wang's sole attempt to show that he has the party's best interests at heart was working with the main characters in a political puppet show.

While both Ma and Wang have tried in the past to put reports of a strained relationship to rest, political analysts say that Wang's future lies in his own hands.

However, which positions will be available to him will be determined by his relationship with Ma.
