A major general of the ROC Army was recently detained for allegedly spying for China over a period of nine years, marking the most high-profile case of cross-strait espionage in nearly two decades. Before his arrest, the 51-year-old general was the head of communications and electronic information at the Army Command Headquarters. The Ministry of Defense admits so far it's hard to assess the overall damages that may have been caused by his actions.

Condemning Luo Hsien-che as a disgrace to the military, the Ministry of National Defense apologized to the public for the espionage case.

Luo is the highest-ranking military official suspected of spying for China since martial law was lifted, and reportedly spied for the PRC for nine years.

The 51-year old general graduated from the ROC Military Academy and National Defense University, and currently heads the Army's Communications, Electronics and Information Division.

Luo previously served as the commander of the 6th Army Corps' communications division.

The Army, meanwhile, says that certain media outlets are reporting erroneous information, and that Luo once served as the chief military officer of the ROC's representative office in Thailand rather than the U.S.

According to a military spokesperson, the case has already entered the judicial process.
