After a month of strained relations, the bitter diplomatic standoff between Taiwan and the Philippines seemed to have come to a peaceful end yesterday. Following a meeting with the Philippines special envoy in the morning, Foreign Affairs Minster Timothy Yang said the nation's sincerity in mending ties with Taiwan has been recognized, and in return, the ROC government will ease its restrictions on Filipino laborers in due course. Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Yang held the hand of the Phillipines special envoy former Senator Roxas and he was all smiles this time, since the deportation row is finally settled. The South East Asian country has not only replaced the immigration officials responsible for the mistake but also accepted Taiwan's proposal of establishing a mutual legal assistance framework and an economic partnership agreement. Minister Yang approved the Philippine governmnet's moves. Roxas promised to establish a direct communication channel between the two governments to avoid similiar incidents from happening again. During the meeting in the morning, he met with Foreign Minister Timothy Yang and President Ma Ying-jeou. Chief of criminal investigation bureau Lin Deh-wanh is now in China for a negotiation process on whether the 14 fraud suspects can be tried in Taiwan or not. Lin says the two sides agree to hand the suspects to Taiwan but the certain date is not confirmed yet. Mainland Chinese also promised to give the related data to Taiwan before the departure.
