Amid safety concerns over the radiation leaks of the nuclear plant in Fukushima, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan has issued red-alert in several areas, including the northeastern Japan and the Kanto regions. Meawhile, the Atomic Energy Council has also installed radiation checkpoints at international airports to control and assist those who are contaminated or exposed to radiation.

In response to Japan's nuclear crisis, the Atomic Energy Council is employing prevention and protection mechanisms including radiation detection checkpoints at Taipei Songshan Airport, Taoyuan International Airport, and Kaohsiung International Airport.

However, travelers are not required to pass through the checkpoint and the checkpoints are employed for flights arriving from certain areas.

The radiation detectors are the same ones found at Taiwan's nuclear power plants, and issue a short beep when a subject is found to be free of radiation.

When unusual levels of radiation are detected, a long beep sounds and checkpoint personnel take over for a secondary inspection.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also issued red travel alerts for northeastern Japan, eastern Hokkaido, southern coastal areas, and Tokyo.
