According to statistics, there are 94 schools in Taiwan that are located within 200 meters away from the faults.

With the recent devastation in Japan, many people are raising questions to whether these buildings are strong enough to withstand earthquakes.

To ease the public's concern, the Ministry of Education said that the structures have been strengthened to sustain similar damages after the 921 earthquake,

and schools located near the faults are constantly monitored for the safety of students.

Inside National Kaohsiung Normal University's Yanchao campus, there's a mud volcano.

The campus was actually built on top of the Chishang fault.

The school says that it has noticed the faults are moving slowly over a long period of monitoring.

So far, only a small bump is seen on the bridge before the school building.

Also located on a fault is Dapo Elementary School in Taitung.

The base of the slide grew and the school's retaining wall is broken in half.

A long crack appears and it moves at a speed of two to three centimeters a year.

According to a statistic by Ministry of Education, a total of 94 schools in Taiwan are located within 200 meters away from faults.

Observers worry whether the school buildings are secured enough to resist huge earthquakes.

Ministry of Education says that while school buildings built after the 921 earthquake were required to resist magnitude 7 earthquakes, it will ask schools to conduct routine disaster prevention drill and enhance the related education efforts.
