In response to DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen's statement, KMT lawmakers said that without nuclear power plants, Taiwan's carbon emission amount from energy use will increase, which is a violation of the Kyoto Protocol. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taipower also said that stopping the construction on No. 4 nuclear plant would result in a potential loss of one trillion NT dollars.

On Thursday, DPP presidential nominee candidate Tsai Ing-wen vowed to halt construction on the fourth nuclear power plant and the Kuokuang petrochemical complex and construct a nuclear-free garden if she is elected.

In response, pan-blue legislators pointed out that Tsai's plans would not only detrimentally affect Taiwan's economic growth, but also cause carbon emissions to soar and force Taiwan to be in violation of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs further noted that halting construction on the fourth nuclear plant would result in immediate direct losses of 26.88 million NT and future indirect losses of more than 1 trillion NT,

and that the inadequate supply of power would subsequently cause industrial losses and force investors to focus elsewhere.

Taipower also said that both Tokyo Electric Power's "Fukushima 50" and its own workers are on the frontline of nuclear safety.

During a legislative interpellation earlier this week, Premier Wu Den-yih said that pulling the plug on the fourth nuclear power plant would be an illogical move.
