We sometimes hear news stories where a veteran soldier would donate his substantial life savings to charities. But there are also many unmarried veterans here in Taiwan who passed away before they got to decide what to do with their assets, which would eventually go to the national treasury. And according to the latest official statistics, more than 10 billion NT dollars have been transferred from the accounts of deceased veterans to the government over the past decade.

The Yunlin resident, Lee Chi-an, who was a veteran in the Korean war, donated 1 million NTD to the 88 flooding disaster relife fund.

Another veteran Yi Dien-jia, who lives in Taichung, has donated a total of 7 million NTD to 11 charity groups over the 20 years.

Many veterans decide to donate their assets to charity groups or the national treasury.

Some pass away before they get to decide how they want to deal with their assets.

According to the law, their assets will be returned to the national treasury.

From 1999 to February of 2011, the amount of money of this sort has exceeded 10 billion NTD.

This proves that many old veterans did manage to save a lot of money living a frugal lifestyle.

But they also become the easy targets of scams.

Many veterans live alone without families.

Legislators ask the Veterans Affairs Commission to take good care of them and prevent these individuals from becoming the targets of scam schemes.
