DISASTER PREVENTION MAP RELEASED

In a bid to prevent serious floods during the typhoon season, the Executive Yuan has released the Disaster Prevention Maps, which stimulates the possible flooding disasters across the island.

Experts said that the information will allow the local governments to better design the evacuation routes in case of a disaster, while the central government can use it to properly plan the usage of the land.

Due to its lower-lying land, Jiadong Township in Pingtung County has always been flooded whenever a typhoon hits or a heavy rainfall occurs,and local residents don't know where they can take shelter when such disaster happens.

To help people with similar situations, the Executive Yuan has released its latest Disaster Prevention Map which combines the potential flooding forecast,as well as the landslide and geohazard information provided by the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau.

With each village as a unit, the map has simulated the potential disaster caused by different rainfall amount.

The central government hopes that the map will help local government in arranging evacuation plans for the public,conducting disaster drills and arranging a disaster relief effort.

Minister of the Public Construction Commission, Lee hong-yuan said that the map can also be used as a reference for the government in deciding the use of land.

However, Lee also indicated that even though the map has covered 80% of the severely-devastated areas when typhoon Morakot hit in 2009, only 35% of the map is completed.

The National Science and Technology for Disaster Reduction will speed up the completion of the map before the National Fire Agency posts the map online in June, so that the public can look into the proper evacuation routes and shelters near their homes.
