Rapper LL Cool Jay made a heartfelt statement as he opens up the 54th annual Grammy Awards, the music industry's biggest night of the year, to remember one of the most influential entertainers of all time, singer Whitney Houston, who passed away without warning at the age of 48 on Saturday.

LL Cool Jay: "There is no way around this. We've had a death in our family. So, at least for me, the only way to begin this is with a prayer for a woman we loved, a fallen sister, Whitney Houston." He wasn't the only that took the stage to pay respect to Houston, whose sudden death stunned the world, breaking the hearts of millions of fans.

Singer Jennifer Hudson, who also admired Houston's powerful voice, took over the mic and belted out a rendition of the late superstar's hit, I Will Always Love You, to celebrate her talent that will be forever missed.

To match the touching words of Hudson at the end of the tune, soul diva Adele was awash in tears, as she dominates the Grammys with 6 awards, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album for "21," and Record and Song of the Year. The 23-year-old Londoner also performed for the first time since undergoing throat surgery last year, which led to a roaring, standing ovation from a crowd full of stars.

Rock band Foo Fighters captured five awards, including Best Rock Album for "Wasting Light," and Best Rock performance and Rock Song for "Walk." Although rapper Kanye West was a no-show, he won big at the star-studded event with four Grammys, including Best Album for "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy."
