A medical research team of NTU made a major breakthrough in cancer treatment, successfully reducing the size of tumors on groundhogs' livers by nearly 90%. Assessments are being made for potential human testing.

Liver disease has always been one of the top ranking diseases in Taiwan in terms of its patient numbers with currently 3 million Hepatitis B patients in Taiwan while 5,000 people would die from liver cancer each year.

In the past, the general practice would be to surgically remove part of the liver, which is only for those who dont have the problem of weak liver or multiple liver disease for their liver cancer cells might spread even more easily.

However, there might be a new way to treat liver diseases in the future for a research team from the National Taiwan University had discovered that, by injection four different cancer suppressing genes, it is possible to prevent further growth of cancer cells.

The research took the liver cancer research team 5 years of time on animal testing and discovered that, after just 2 weeks, the liver tumor on aground hog shrank at least 85% while those tumors under 1 centimeters in size had disappeared all together.

The finding will be in the August Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The National Taiwan University hospital would further explore the possibility of the test on humans for possible future liver cancer treatment break through.
