A portion of a park in Banciao city is about to used as the site of a new police station, and as a result, more than 100 old trees will have to be relocated. But local residents and environmental groups reacted strongly to the arrangement, and have started a campaign to preserve these arboreal resources.

Inside the stone sculpture park in Banciao, there are old trees everywhere. Local residents enjoy relaxing under shades.

But the part of the area is fenced secretly since last Friday evening as the county government is to build a new police station.

When the government sent excavators and construction workers to move the 100 trees away, residents criticize the move, saying that the park is natural habitats for birds and trees, not for a police station. It will take at least several dozen years before the beautiful sceneries can be restored.

Facing criticism from local residents and environmental groups, Taipei County police bureau says the construction project is legitimate and has been approved through proper procedures.

All the old trees removed will be handled properly.

The construction project is to begin in 9 days but those who oppose the project and the environmental groups decide to form a self-help association and launch a petition to try to influence the fate of these old trees.
