While Typhoon Megi slammed northeastern Taiwan, the aftermath of the Typhoon Fanapi on paddy fields in Southern Taiwan has just begun, causing a severe loss for the rice farmers.

The sampled grains were dark, dried and flat.

Only less than 70% of the rice grains can be husked from every 100 catties.

Due to typhoon Fanapi, the quality of rice being harvested now is poor and the production volume is low.

In fact, the second harvest of paddies should come in another two weeks.

Now it's the first harvest that farmers paid to irrigate since the paddy fields in Chianan area were left fallow in January.

In other words, farmers spent more money to grow the paddy fields but they happened to see the lowest rice prices in four years.

The price for each 100 catties is only ranged between 760 to 820 NTD.

In Chianan area, the paddy fields are only harvested twice a year.

The first harvest was left fallow due to typhoon Morakot, which clogged the water reservoir with mud.

As both the quality and the quantity of the second harvest are lowered, farmers could only hope that the prices would go up after the official second harvest begins in two weeks.
