To cope with the overabundance of tangerines produced in Yunlin's Gukeng, farmers have created a new type of organic tangerine to target those who are health conscious. Although three times more expensive than regular ones, you won't ever have worry about getting your hands sticky because you can eat the entire fruit, without peeling it.

Planted without fertilizers or pesticides, the peels of these organic tangerines are edible.

Four years ago, farmer Huang Chih-chuan decided that he'd had enough of dealing with excess tangerine supplies year in and year out, and began transitioning into organic farming.

According to Huang, he began researching organic tangerines that can be eaten peel and all because more and more consumers are seeing the benefits of organic produce.

Due to the absence of pesticides, he is constantly battling pest damage and his production levels have fallen.

Although organic tangerines fetch three times the price of ordinary tangerines, Huang says that many farmers don't know how to market organic produce and therefore lack distribution channels.

He hopes that agricultural authorities can assist local farmers market their goods and help them earn a living.
