And in other parts of town, some people are getting wet for the Songkran Festival, which is celebrated as the traditional New Year's Day from April 13th to April 15th in many Southeast Asian countries. The water splashing custom is believed to wash away bad luck, while bringing in good fortune for the new year. Both big and small are taking part in this celebration of water, splashing each other with different devices. It is like a war and everyone is wet within a few minutes. This group of students from Thailand is taking part in this Songkran Festival with their secret weapon. Held in April each year, this custom of Thai and Myanmar people and those in other Southeast Asian countries is like a New Year celebration. Here in New Taipei City's Chungho area, Huaxin Street, there is a large population of Thai and Myanmar overseas Chinese. From 1998 till now, they have hosted this Songkran celebration for those that cannot return home to their friends and families. According to tradition, water can wash away bad luck.
