Former Premier Lee Huan passed away on Thursday at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital due to multiple organ failure. He was 94. And true to his self-effacing style, the late politician had earlier told his family not to hold a public memorial ceremony for him, because all he wanted is to be fondly remembered by his friends.

Former premier Lee Huan passed away at 7:35pm on Thursday night at the Taipei Veteran Hospital at the age of 94 due to pneumonia that led to multiple organ failure.

Lee was the right hand man of former president Chiang ChingKuo and was referred to as the most suitable person to carry out Chiangs policies.

Lee was also an important person behind the plan to promote local Taiwanese talents at that time to allow more people of Taiwanese background to be able to participate in politics, which benefited current KMT honorary chairman Wu Po Shun and former Minister of Examination Yuan, Hsu shui Teh.

Former DPP chairman Hsu ShinLiang was also recommended by Lee to be nominated by the KMT to be the Provincial legislator, but was later involved in the Chungli incident back in 1977 when he ran for Taoyuan county magistrate but not under the KMT party.

That incident caused Lee his job and removed him from politics for years.

During the late stage of the Chiang administration, Lee returned as the KMT secretary general but eventually has to face the power struggle between the old and the new Lee DengHui administration after Chiang passed away.

Lee once was elected KMT central committee commissioner with the most votes at the 13th meeting, which showed his popularity, is almost to the level of Lee DengHui.

Yu Kuo Hua, the former premier at the time had to step down and Lee Denh Hui had no choice but to name Lee Huan as the new premier to secure his own spot in the KMT.

After moving to the Executive department, Lee Huans old post of KMT secretary general was passed to Jame Sung, who was an important person of the Lee DenHui faction.

Lee Huan would eventually lost his power in the political circle when he was replaced with Hao PoChun after Lee DenHui took office as president.

Lee reached the top of his political career and was forced out within a year who went through the harsh political arena with a tough fight.

Before he passed away, Lee Huan mentioned to his children that no memorial service should be held for him, hoping that those friends and family who missed him can keep him in their hearts.
